How Fever Works
We all know that fevers are marked by much higher temperatures. When your baby's temperature rises above the 37°C range and goes as high as 38°C, then he probably has a fever. But what is the cause of this temperature rise and why is it important?
Think of it this way. Your baby's internal organs need to be kept at certain temperature to function efficiently. When the temperature is a bit higher than usual, we sweat to get off the heat. There's a portion of the brain called the hypothalamus that works as a regulator. A thermostat. On normal days, when everything is perfect within the body, your baby's temperature remains at around 98.6°F (37°C). Internal temperature's vary with each person and changes at different times during the day. You may find that your baby's temperature lower in the morning and a little higher in the evening. As long as it's within the normal range, there's no cause for alarm. However, when a foreign body like a virus or an infection is introduced into the body, the thermostat causes your baby's temperature to rise above the established normal range. At this time, your can safely conclude that your baby is having a fever.
